DEAR COLLEAGUE, WELCOME TO CHPUK
As health professionals, we have dedicated our working lives to serve and care for the people of the UK. It is critical that the public health and safety of our communities are properly considered within energy policy development for the UK. Currently we believe that this is not the case and that inadequate work has been undertaken to assess health risks of continued fossil fuel extraction including Unconventional Gas Extraction (UGE).
You will have heard of fracking already and you may or may not be familiar with some of the risks and harms to health associated with it. Mounting evidence in the United States and worldwide, shows that it can cause widespread damage to individual and public health.
Fracking goes by other names; high volume hydraulic fracking (HVHF) and unconventional gas exploration & extraction (UGEE). All have one thing in common, namely the exploration & extraction of gas or oil from shale rock. We will refer to all fracking onward as Unconventional Gas Extraction (UGE).
We ask you to consider signing the petition, knowing that to do so you must be aware of what fracking is, the damages it can inflict, and what the medical and scientific evidence for these impacts are. These have been extensively listed by our colleagues in New York State in a work known as the Compendium of Scientific, Medical and Media Findings Demonstrating Risks and Harms of Fracking (Unconventional Gas and Oil Extraction (fifth edition 2018)
We also refer you to work produced by MedAct in the UK, MedAct in the UK Shale Gas Production in England An Updated Health Assessment 2016
We are convinced that any introduction of fracking in England would result in serious health problems to individuals and communities, irrespective of the best attempts at regulation. We join other countries in this belief including Ireland, Wales & Scotland, who currently have either a moratorium or ban in place.
As Concerned Health Professionals we respectfully request your support in addressing this issue.
